Jorge Valente Gurgel (born January 25, 1977 in Fortaleza, Brazil) is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) practitioner and a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter.
Gurgel starred in the second season of The Ultimate Fighter television series and was eliminated from the show in the fifth episode due to a loss to Jason Von Flue by unanimous decision. Gurgel is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who trains with Rich Franklin. He currently lives in West Chester, Ohio.
Gurgel's match with Diego Saraiva at UFC 73 was designated as the "fight of the night" by the UFC. In the contest, Gurgel defeated Saraiva in a unanimous decision, even though he was badly injured during the fight. He was hospitalized afterward, due to a broken jaw and the presence of blood in his urine.
After his loss to Aaron Riley Gurgel was released from the UFC. He has now signed with Strikeforce.
Gurgel has been criticized throughout his seven-fight run in the UFC for not displaying jiu-jitsu in his fights. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, the 31-year-old has generally elected to slug it out on his feet.
"I'm so sick of people asking why I don't do jiu-jitsu," Gurgel said. "So I'm going to start doing it so people can shut up. 'Why don't you do jiu-jitsu?' Come on, man.
"(UFC announcer) Joe Rogan, everybody asks me. 'Why don't you do jiu-jitsu? You'd be in the top of the guys in the weight class if you would do jiu-jitsu.' But I always get caught up in not being boring."
