"[Brandon Vera] is not a submission expert, he's not going to be that dangerous on the ground - he'll be more dangerous on his feet - his punching and kicking is more effective than Nogueira. I'm focusing on trying to force him to wrestle me the entire fight - get my hands on him and make him wrestle. I think the fight is going to go very well. I'll cut him off, put a lot of pressure on him and make him work. I'll try and get him near to the fence and knock him down every chance I'll get, and beat him up on the ground. I'm not in the illusion that I'm going to fight forever, but I'm having a blast. I'm still getting better as an athlete and a fighter and will take one fight at a time. But it's not really about achievement anymore, or accolades or any of that. It's more about doing what I have a passion for and doing what I love. I love to train and I love the competition, and I love to do it. Achievements and winning titles and all the other stuff is the icing on the cake." - Randy Couture
Former UFC heavyweight and light-heavyweight champion Randy Couture breaks down his upcoming UFC 105 opponent Brandon Vera and also sheds some light on his mentality on fighting at 46-years of age.
Couture (16-10) has fought and defeated the best fighters in MMA in a career which has netted him a place in the UFC hall-of-fame. The former Olympic wrestler is one of only two UFC fighters in history to hold titles in two different weight classes and looks to make a jump back to the light-heavyweight division from the heavyweight division where he has competed since 2007.
Couture last fought as a light-heavyweight against fellow MMA legend Chuck Liddell at UFC 57 where he lost via second round knockout. He came out of a brief retirement a year later to face then heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia, and shocked the MMA world by dominating the giant heavyweight en route to a unanimous decision win. He defended his title once against Gabriel Gonzaga before contract issues prompted another year long hiatus from the sport, but he returned toward the end of 2008 and gave gusty performances in back-to-back losses to Brock Lesnar and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira respectively.
He'll face the aformented Vera at UFC 105 on Nov. 14 in Manchester, England.
