The UFC announced today that a heavyweight bout between rising contender Junior dos Santos and former title challenger Gabriel Gonzaga will co-headline its UFC Fight Night 21 event in March.
UFC Fight Night 21 event takes place on March 21 at The Odeum Colorado in Broomfield, Co.; the first of two UFC events that will air live on Versus in 2010. The event is headlined by a light-heavyweight bout between Jon Jones and Brandon Vera.
Dos Santos and Gonzaga were originally supposed to face each other at UFC 108 on Jan. 2, however, Gonzaga was forced to withdraw from the event due to a staph infection.
Dos Santos (10-1) is currently riding a five-fight winning streak and is coming off of a first-round TKO win over Gilbert Yvel at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" in Las Vegas on January 2. The win moved him to a perfect 4-0 in the UFC, with previous stoppage wins inside the Octagon coming against Fabricio Werdum, Stefan Struve and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic.
Gonzaga (11-4) is 3-1 in his last four bouts, most recently defeating Chris Tuchscherer via first-round TKO at UFC 102 in August in a bout that was marred by a brutal, accidental low-blow by Gonzaga. His only loss during the stretch came against current UFC heavyweight title challenger Shane Carwin at UFC 96 in March.
Gonzaga holds a 7-3 record in 10 fights with the UFC, with other notable Octagon wins coming against Kevin Jordan, Justin McCully and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic.
