Lew Polley, in Dana White's office
by Nathan Joel on April 28, 2011

MMA is big business now and that is a good thing. I remember when people thought we were a bunch of criminals, and we were afraid to tell the doctor how one goes about getting that strange bruising pattern on the torso. Nowadays we brag about it: "Yes, Doc, my grappling coach finished a head-arm triangle by going knee-on-belly, rather than perpendicular, just to teach me something new..." And what's funny is nowadays a fair amount of doctors would know exactly what you were saying. I know at least one who might advise a counter move, explaining how your opponent is giving up pressure for control which might allow ... blah, blah. You get the idea.

But big business comes with lots of drama; lots of people trying to make a name for themselves, trying to make a living (or a killing), trying to become a celebrity, a star. In light of that, prepare yourself for a shock ... wait for it ... wait for it ... okay, here goes: Lew Polley thinks Junior dos Santos is an attention-whore!

I know what you are thinking: Lew? Lew who? Who is Lew?

Lew Polley is the wrestling coach for Team dos Santos on this season of The Ultimate Fighter, which if ratings are to be believed many of you are not watching. He was mildly rebuked by dos Santos for taking too much of the lead in training, pushing the guys too hard, not letting JDS be the head coach. Polley says: "Junior's biggest problem was he became an attention whore and he didn't get the attention he wanted, so he took it out on me. The reason why is I speak English, it's my first language. Sorry. Junior doesn't. People would ask me to do things and he didn't like it. He became a big baby."

We have an inordinate amount of "big" personalities in this show business called MMA. Seriously, we have everyone from Dana to Chael, Bisbing to the Diaz brothers. But Junior dos Santos is not one of them. If anything, this season of TUF has revealed him to be too nice of a guy, too playful, really a big kid of sorts. At least until he hits you.

The following is an imaginary conversation between Dana White and Lew Polley:

(You, the reader, must insert the f-bomb every 7 words or so for a true Dana White experience. But then you knew that already.)

Dana: Hey. How ya doin' Lew? Can I call you Lew?

Lew: Well, I would prefer--

Dana: Lew, listen, here's the thing, I saw your video calling Junior an attention whore. Seemed kind of petty, Lew. The point is, Lew, that Junior dos Santos was the show celebrity, along the Lesnar ... but not you, Lew, not you. Did you notice the posters on the walls? Right, funny isn't it; no pictures of you. Thing is, Lew, not even the fighters on the show are celebrities. Not yet. Nobody knows them yet, Lew. Nobody knows you. We do a show with you as the draw and 4 people watch, Lew, all of them your cousins. Junior dos Santos asked you to assist, Lew, and it was a great opportunity. You should have been making JDS look good. That's how it works, Lew. Instead you call him an attention whore, Lew? He is the nicest coach in TUF history, almost child-like in his sweetness, Lew. And you insult him, Lew?

Lew: Well, just because nobody--

Dana: So Lew, listen, here's the thing, let's take...
