A middleweight bout between former title contender Nate Marquardt and Alessio Sakara as well as a heavyweight bout between TUF 10 cast member Brendan Schaub and Chris Tuchscherer are the latest rumored additions to the quickly growing UFC 116 card on July 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The fight possibilities were first reported on the official Twitter account of Joe Ferraro from Sports Net Canada.
"Sources telling me that UFC 116 will likely see Nate Marquardt take on Alessio Sakara, while Brendan Schaub may be facing Chris Tuchscherer." said Ferraro in the post.
Marquardt (29-9-2) is coming off of a loss against Chael Sonnen at UFC 109 in February. Prior to the loss, he nearly earned a rematch with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva after putting together three straight stoppage wins over Martin Kampmann, Wilson Gouveia and Demian Maia.
Marquardt holds an 8-3 UFC record, scoring other notable Octagon wins over Dean Lister, Joe Doerksen and Ivan Salaverry, while suffering his only other UFC losses against Thales Leites and Anderson Silva.
Sakara (15-7) is currently riding an impressive three-fight winning streak, notching wins over Joe Vedepo, Thales Leites and most recently James Irvin at UFC on Versus 1 on March 21. The wins came at a much needed time for Sakara as he previously went through a 1-2 stretch that saw him suffer TKO losses to Houston Alexander and Chris Leben.
Sakara sports a 6-4 (1 NC) UFC record, with other Octagon wins coming over Victor Valimaki, Elvis Sinosic and James Lee.
Schaub most recently scored a very impressive 47-second TKO win over Chase Gormley, which also took place at UFC on Versus 1 last month in Broomfield, Colorado. He previously suffered his first career loss in his official UFC debut against Roy Nelson in the heavyweight final of The Ultimate Fighter 10 finale in December.
Schaub has put together a near flawless 5-1 MMA record over his two year professional career, picking up previous wins for two other promotions; Ring of Fire and Ultimate Warrior Challenge veteran. He has finished all of his five career wins by TKO.
Tuchscherer (18-2) is 4-1 in his last five bouts, he last saw action at February's UFC 109 event, where he earned a close majority decision win over Tim Hague. His lone loss over that span came in his previous bout, a first round TKO loss against Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 102 in August. The Minnesota Martial Arts Academy product suffered a brutal low blow from Gonzaga in the bout and never fully recovered which ultimately led to the TKO loss.
UFC 116 is expected to be headlined by a UFC heavyweight title unification bout between UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and interim heavyweight champ Shane Carwin. Also, middleweights Yoshihiro Akiyama and Wanderlei Silva will face each other in the night's co-main event.
