A light-heavyweight bout between longtime MMA veteran Vladimir Matyushenko and former WEC light-heavyweight champion Steve Cantwell is in the works for UFC 108 on Jan. 2, 2010, in Las Vegas, NV. News of the bout was first reported by Dave Meltzer from the Wrestling Observer.
Matyushenko (23-4) is 10-1 in his last 11 bouts, most recently picking up his second straight win by defeating UFC newcomer Igor Pokrajac in his Octagon return at UFC 103 in September. His lone loss over the successful stretch came against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at Affliction: "Day of Reckoning" in January.
Matyushenko holds a 4-2 UFC record, which includes a 3-2 previous stint with the promotion from June 2001 to Sept. 2003. He sports notable Octagon wins over Yuki Kondo, Travis Wiuff and Pedro Rizzo, while suffering UFC losses against Tito Ortiz and Andrei Arlovski.
"The Janitor" has fought for other notable promotions during his 12-year career such as IFL, Call To Arms, IFC and Jungle Fight. He holds other notable career wins over the likes of Vernon White, Tim Boetsch, Anthony Ruiz and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
Cantwell (7-3) opened his UFC career in an impressive fashion by scoring a first-round submission win over Razak Al-Hassan in his Octagon debut in Dec. 2008. He is now fighting to keep his job with the UFC, as he has since lost back-to-back fights inside the Octagon against Luiz Cane and, most recently, Brian Stann in their third match up at UFC Fight Night 19 in September.
Prior to joining the UFC, Cantwell went 3-1 in the UFC's sister promotion, WEC, scoring notable wins with the organization over Brian Stann and Tim McKenzie. He suffered his lone WEC loss against Stann in their first match up. The Jungle Fight and Rage in the Cage veteran has finished all of his seven career wins, and holds other notable wins in his four-year career over Richie Hightower and Leonardo Pecanha.
UFC 108 is headlined by a light-heavyweight bout between former UFC light-heavyweight champion Rashad Evans and contender Thiago Silva. In addition, welterweights Paul Daley and Carlos Condit will look to continue their climb towards a title shot when they face each other at the event.
